Sarnia’s Historic Catch The Ace – Now Has a Documentary

You can see me in the first minute of this new documentary about a little lottery that became a weekly event and absolutely energized our little community. Skye Zimmer did a great job of telling the story of the Royal Canadian Legion’s Catch the Ace in Sarnia.

I went every week and braced for the long lines by bringing a book with me. I packed a lunch and a water bottle in my backpack. And some weeks, I needed a sweater or an umbrella to battle the elements.

It took me about an hour or longer to get through the long line and secure my ticket each week. But I was sure I knew where the ace was. I also had big plans to put the money back into the community if I had won. I didn’t, but the community sure did.

“What started as a weekly lottery at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 62 in Sarnia quickly grew into something much bigger than anyone could have expected.

Over the course of 46 weeks, Catch the Ace brought together thousands of people as ticket sales increased, the jackpot continued to grow, and the anticipation built with every draw. Behind the scenes, a dedicated group of volunteers worked week after week to keep everything running, while the community continued to show its support.

From the early days of the lottery to the excitement surrounding the final draw, this documentary takes a closer look at how Catch the Ace grew, the challenges along the way, and the people who made it all possible.

By the time the winning ticket was drawn on July 23, 2026, the final jackpot had reached an incredible $4.5 million, with more than $3.4 million going back to local charities and organizations. What began as a fundraiser for the Legion became something that had a lasting impact throughout Sarnia and the surrounding communities.

Through interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and moments captured throughout the lottery, Catch the Ace tells the story of the volunteers, the excitement, and the community support that made these 46 weeks so memorable.

More than just a lottery, it’s a look at what can happen when a community comes together.”
