Creating the Perfect Soundtrack for Your Special Day
Creating the perfect playlist for your wedding is an essential part of setting the mood for your special day. Music has the power to evoke emotions, bring people together, and create lasting memories. Here’s a guide to help you craft a memorable soundtrack for your wedding celebration.
Seating Music
Guests typically start to arrive 30 minutes before the ceremony. It’s nice to have some soft music playing as everyone gets settled. I have a playlist of wedding songs that help set the mood for what is to come.
Perhaps you want music without lyrics. These fun instrumental cover songs are also a perfect fit to have playing as your guests arrive to the ceremony.
You pick out a dozen or so songs that help fit the theme or mood you want to create for your big day. There are no rules. This is your wedding. Design it how you like!
Ceremony Music
It’s your wedding. You can pick songs that have meaning to you. A typical ceremony might look like this . . .
- Bridal Party Entrance
- Bride’s Entrance
- Register Signing
- Bridal Party Exit
Some people have additional music for parents walking down the aisle before the bridal party. You can add anything you want to this list.
Cocktail Hour
Do you want pop music, instrumental covers, country, or a personalized playlist that you have crafted? This one is weird because you will likely not be around to hear any of these tunes. You will probably be busy getting photos with your spouse and respective families.
Introductions
Will you be a grand entrance? If so, what song would you like your bridal party to come in to? Do you want a separate song for the women and men? What song do you want to hear as you get
Dinner Music
Do you want pop music, instrumental covers, country, or a personalized playlist that you have crafted? It’s up to you! You will be hearing these tunes but they will be in the background.
Special Dances
Here is a list of special dances you might wish to include . . .
- First Dance as Married Couple
- Father & Bride
- Mother & Groom
- Bridal Party Slow Song
- Slow Song For All Guests (This is a great way to kick off the party)
Other Music Choices
Kicking off the dance with a classic song that guests of all-ages will know is a great idea. Something like ABBA’s Dancing Queen or Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody are popular party-starters.
You may have a special song for the cake cutting. You may also like to choose the very last song of the night.
Don’t Play List
Have any songs, genres, or artists that you can’t stand? Let your DJ know and you won’t have to hear them at your wedding.
Please Play
You can choose a handful of songs you’d like played at your wedding or create a playlist of all your favourites. You don’t have to worry about the flow or order of this playlist. Just draft a list of songs you like. Your DJ will choose the order and timing of the tracks to have the best impact on the wedding and dance floor. If you’d rather leave all of this to the professional expertise of your DJ, you can do that too.
Planning Document
A good DJ will provide you with a planning document so you can both be on the same page about all of the music for your special day.
Planning your wedding playlist can be a fun and rewarding process that allows you to express your style and create unforgettable moments. With these tips, you’re well on your way to crafting the perfect soundtrack for your big day.
