Teachers are Magic

“Every day, as a teacher, I am asked to be a magician in a world where magic doesn’t exist”

Truer words have never been spoken. What we do is tough.

It’s hard to get kids excited about learning in a world where mediocrity is celebrated. It’s not cool to try. You get made fun of if you get good marks and excel in school.

Battling this culture is probably the hardest thing I have to do as a middle school teacher.

I still haven’t quite figured out how to reach every single student. Things that work with one group of kids, don’t work with all of them. Great time-honoured strategies fail. Teaching is like a performance art. We need to know our audience well and work together.

Great teaching is magic. There’s no other way to say it.
