Everything is Awesome! (Do we overuse that adjective?)

Everything is AwesomeHave you seen the Lego Movie?

Emmet, the main character of the film, continually refers to everything as awesome. There is a catchy song to go with this sentiment as well.

Emmet isn’t the only person to over-use the word awesome.

“Awesome” gets bandied about way more than it probably should be. Not everything can be awesome.

Here is a tidbit of wisdom on the subject from the book Get It Done by Sam Bennett.

Get it Done book

“In his book Skinny Legs and All, Tom Robbins says, ‘The inability to correctly perceive reality is often responsible for humans’ insane behavior. And every time they substitute an all-purpose, sloppy slang word for the words that would accurately describe an emotion or a situation, it lowers their reality orientations, pushes them further from shore, out onto the foggy waters of alienation and confusion.”

So maybe, we should be a little more respectful of this awesome word and use it only when it is called for. I mean, not everything can be as awesome as this blog post or The Lego Movie, right?
