Getting Older and Feeling It

Yesterday I was teaching a Grade 2 gym class. Everything was fine, until the moment it wasn’t.

I don’t know exactly what I did but it hurt. It felt like somebody kicked me hard in my lower back. Of course, nobody did. I managed to finish the class with no one being the wiser, but it was a little tough.
I normally walk with a large stride and a fairly fast pace. I couldn’t do that anymore. I walked down the hallway slowly and deliberately after that class.
At first, I thought it was related to the high jump injury I had a few years back. I was sure my back was just “acting up” and that it would be fine once I got home and applied some heat to it for a while.
It didn’t feel any better this morning. I actually bought some pain medication for it, and if you know me, you know I don’t do that. I usually just suffer through whatever it is. But the pain was constant. It was hard to walk or move in certain ways. I had to take something for it.
Even now, it still hurts.
I hate getting old.
It feels like I am falling apart.
This is a new problem, something that’s never bothered me before, I don’t like it.
I am a trail runner and a skateboarder. I am very active. I can usually push and push myself. I don’t like having to slow down. I don’t like having to take it easy. I don’t like walking slow. I’ve hated the fact that it’s been so nice these past two days and I haven’t been able to hit the trails for a run.
I’m hitting the sack now. Hopefully a good night’s sleep will rejuvenate me and get me back to my young-feeling self soon.

  1. Hi Chase .. yup – it's not too brilliant getting old .. and now I'm stiff from sitting too long with my Mama and Uncle .. something's got to give – ie me = has to get up and on with it … I'm exercising – wish one good night's sleep would do the trick .. sadly about 6 months' of 'hard work' ahead of me!! I'll get there ..

    Cheers Hilary

  2. Hi Hilary,

It still hurts. I must have strained a muscle somehow, turned the wrong way maybe. I don't know. Just taking it easy. Hope I'll be back to normal soon.

I guess everyone has these little problems. Never thought much about it before. I've always felt young and energetic. I still do, just a little hiccup.

Hope things go as smoothly as possible for you over the next little while. I know you have a lot to deal with.

    Cheers!
