Free Teaching Resources (Part 2)

iLearn Technology is a great blog that all teachers should follow. It is all about integrating technology into the classroom.

Here are a few resources that they have profiled that interest me. I haven’t had the chance to use them yet. I’m writing this post to remind myself that I need to start using these, soon. Hopefully, you will find them useful too.

Try subscribing to this blog using Google Reader or RSS via email so you won’t miss out on every great idea. You can’t possibly use them all, but I am sure they have a great resource that your classroom has been missing.

Virtual Base 10 Blocks – Base Ten Blocks are a handy tool to have in the classroom. They help your students understand place value as it allows them to build numbers by using ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands. But what if you don’t have any of these manipulatives? How about this free online resource?

Class Connect – This sounds like a great way to bring social networking into the classroom. Both the teacher and the students can share, collaborate, and work with a variety of documents and files. I will have to check this out soon.

Digital Book About Energy – This would be great for Grade 5 or 6 science class. It is a fully interactive ebook that students will enjoy.

Freebies – An entire page of great free resources. Well worth checking out!

I follow some amazing teaching blogs. I normally just save the posts that interest me by clicking “unread” in my reader. The problem is that those old posts get buried by new great content and I sometimes don’t get back to what originally interested me.

I hope that by sharing these resources and links here on my blog, it will motivate both of us (myself, and you dear reader) to use more of these free resources in our classrooms.

  1. Hi Chase .. I can understand you 'saving' posts to go back to .. and putting them up here .. is certainly an interesting and useful way of saving the content for future.

    Evernote I think would be a good technical adjunct for storing these sorts of things – one day I shall master it!

    I stayed up late last night working on an article I've been struggling with for a month now. I think it's done now. Whew!

    I also used the schedule posts feature on Blogger so that the entire month here on Silent Cacophony can go on auto-pilot.

    So when I get home tonight, I can start working on my novel.

    I think Google Docs would be a great free alternative to Evernote as well. I still prefer thumb drives. Call me old fashioned.

    Thumb drives – do you mean paper fingers? is it that old fashioned .. or am I really showing my ancient age ..

    Thumb drives, USB keys, flashdrives, whatever people call them, are basically like the old floppy disks we used to use.

    Believe it or not, I still have a few of those 3 inch disks with some teaching resources on them. I don't know if I'll ever use them again. Most computers don't even have a disk drive anymore.

    Thankfully they still have USB ports though. That's why I use thumbdrives. Plus it doesn't make me totally reliant on the Internet.

  5. Hi Chase .. tks don't use those properly either .. I have an external hard drive to keep everything on – there if I need to travel ..

    One day I'll catch up and simplify my life .. yes – I have disks too .. hate to think what they've got on them!! You'll always be able to find out what's on them .. if you really want to ..
