A Teacher’s Lunch

This quote has been running over and over in my head whenever I have to eat lunch with my students.

It comes from a TV show where a teenage girl is asked to stay after class by a teacher. The teacher asks her if she minds that she eats while they talk because she doesn’t get a lunch on Tuesdays.

Well yesterday, I didn’t get a chance to eat my lunch during the first nutrition break. I grabbed a granola bar and an apple and it seemed the best I could do.

I almost forgot that I got a prep period every day from 12:00 to 12:30. So out of necessity I ate my lunch in the staff room at that time yesterday. And what do they say about necessity being the mother of invention?

I used to stay in my classroom at that time and work at my desk. I think I’m going to have my lunch at this time now instead.

It’s the perfect solution. This way I still have an actual lunch break every day and I get some time to myself.

It seems perfect.

  1. Sounds like a great solution. You might have to do more prep work at home, but I think the trade-off is worth it. Besides, how much do you really get accomplished in a 30 minute prep period? At home you can get more time dedicated to preparation.

    There’s nothing worse than not having time to eat and then have your blood sugar plummet. It sounds like you’ve found the perfect solution, and like you said, it also gives you some “me” time. That’s a win-win.

    I work from home, so it’s very tempting to eat at “my desk”. I find I am actually more productive if I take a real break from my work, and go back to it, even for a half hour. So enjoy your lunch break 🙂

    I find that I actually do need that “me time.” I can’t stay in the classroom all day with my students. It’s just too much.

    Thanks for stopping by. I think you are probably right. It seems that in this day and age multi-tasking makes sense. But perhaps it doesn’t. Maybe we should all get away from our desks for lunch.

    I’m sure we all need the break.

  7. I have found that, unsociable as it sounds, lately I prefer to eat my lunch by myself.

    I certainly would not want to share that time with students, if I were a teacher. You need a break from all their bright, shiny faces.

    Sometimes it is important just to have time to yourself. I know what you mean.

    And as a teacher, I need a break from the classroom during the day. It’s too much being in the room all day long.

    The good news is that they revised our duty schedule and it’s not too bad anymore.
