Watchmen by Allan Moore and Dave Gibbons

This book is a classic in all rights. It has won a Hugo Award. It has had a huge influence on books that came after it. It is in many people’s top ten lists. And lastly, like all classic literature these days, it is being turned into a film. The one thing that is unique about this book is that it is a comic.

Watchmen is a graphic novel that brings humanity and realism to superheroes. It deals with mature subject matter and is not simply a comic book. It transcends the medium and is brilliantly written. Any preconceived notions that you may have about comics will be thrown out the window when you read this book.

So far, all of my recommended reads have been prose work that would appeal to an adult audience. I don’t believe that this book is any different. It is great literature and should not be discounted because of its format. So even if you have never read a comic book before in your life, this is a must read.

I hope that the upcoming theatrical adaptation of this work will be as well done as another Alan Moore graphic novel adaptation you are probably familiar with it. It is one my all-time favourite movies as well, V for Vendetta.
