My daughter came with me to the radio station last night, just to hang out. But when we got there, it was eerily silent. The computer was not broadcasting the show that comes on before mine. Instead, there was the dreaded thing that sometimes happens in radio – dead air.
I quickly threw on a CD and began to set up my gear. I had planned to start Word is Bond Rap Radio a bit early. But Mars March has a better idea. She asked if she could play some of her music. I needed time to set up so it seemed like a great idea.
She absolutely loved having the chance to be a radio DJ and spin some pop punk music. She didn’t even let something like losing her voice prevent her from doing the show.
I hope you enjoy the very first episode of The Mars March Show!
This is huge. We have never dedicated an entire day to hip-hop before on Radio Western. But what better day to do it than August 11th, the official birthday of hip-hop.
There will be mixshows by live DJs, interview segments, Know Your History episodes, trivia, special guests, and much more.
This is bound to be a great day. And the best of all, it’s free. Just tune in your radio or stream in online. Celebrate hip-hop with us tomorrow.
You can catch me from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m., and then again at 12:00 noon, and finally at 3:30 p.m.
I will be looking closely at why August 11th is considered hip-hop’s birthday, why the Cold Crush Brothers never got their due, exploring the very first rap song recorded (it’s not what you think – and it’s not that one either), and looking at the four elements of hip-hop in depth.
DJ Hullewud will be on at his regular time 10:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight with Break North Radio.
And Tyler Hetherington returns to the airwaves to kick it all off tonight at midnight.
One of the lyrics in a song I played this week says, “Every show needs a DJ” and I couldn’t agree more. That’s why you get two hours of music mixed live on the radio every week here on Word is Bond Rap Radio. And hire a DJ if you are putting on a rap concert. You need one!

I know someone who called our college radio station, “Radio Roulette – you never know what you are going to get.” It’s an apt description of what we do at Radio Western.
Last week, I had a listener text in to the station who had been listening to the station for 24 hours straight. She told me that she enjoyed the first part of the show but had to turn the station off when the music got too explicit for her (both in message and language content)
I still feel bad about chasing away a listener. I like to play positive hip-hop but every now and then I play some offensive stuff. It’s the nature of the genre.
Did I go too far this week? Was it too much? What do you think?

The start of the podcast today isn’t the start of the show. It starts at 3:55. I normally edit this out of the podcast version. Oops, sorry!
I got my start on radio ten years ago with Daddy J on a show called DOPEfm. The show is still going strong Saturday nights in Hamilton, ON, Canada on 93.3 CFMU.
Daddy J paid the Forest City a special visit last week and it was great to have him co-host the show with me.

I’ve gotten a little bit behind on the podcasting of the radio show, and for that I apologize.
I liked the idea of podcasting the show as quickly as possible after the live show. I had been trying to get the new shows posted by Wednesday of each week but that hasn’t been working so well. It’s hard to stay on top of everything (life, family, work, school, exercise, etc) and be as timely as I wanted to be with the posting.
So, I think I will be going back to my old schedule. I plan to release the podcasts on Monday mornings, one week after the original show has aired. Today’s show is Part 2 from the extended show I did two weeks ago and it features an interview with Sankdafied and a live in-studio performance from Traffimatics.
Press play and enjoy!

I had a blast on Word is Bond Rap Radio last week. The two shows that go on before me, didn’t make it in, so I started at 7:00 p.m. and did 5 hours live.
This is the first half of that extended show and features some old school classics that have been sampled countless times. Can you identify some rap songs that have used pieces of these?
After that, I spun some great hip-hop tunes and then had an in-depth discussion with Jesse Dangerously. He tells some great stories and schools us on Canadian hip-hop history.
If you enjoy this episode, let your friends know with a social media post. It is a quick way to support the show.
Thanks for listening!

Up until that point I had never heard of this Australian hip-hop duo. I played the song live on the air and was immediately impressed.
They caught wind of being on the show and messaged me the day after I podcasted it. So they went from request to guest in one week.
It was great talking to them and playing more of their music. Plus, we have two hours of great live radio for you to check out now, or anytime, through the power of online archiving.
