Word is Bond Rap Radio – Christmas Rappin’

It’s time to celebrate Christmas with two hours of great hip-hop music mixed live on the radio.

We start off with the classic “Christmas Rappin'” by Kurtis Blow and ask the question, “Why isn’t this song in popular culture?” Why isn’t it heard right alongside Mariah Carey or Wham? Why are there people who don’t know this song? Or “Christmas in Hollis” by Run-DMC?

Both of these songs are Christmas classics with a lot of appeal. I wonder why they haven’t crossed over.

What say you? Why don’t we hear Christmas rap songs on regular radio, in the shopping malls, and everywhere we go this time of year. We really should!

Hip-Hop Radio Putting Up Numbers

Last week’s edition of Word is Bond Rap Radio was a lot of fun. I had an exclusive interview with The Legendary PMD and the show has put up some pretty impressive numbers.

It’s is charting in 5 different places on Mixcloud and is even in the Top 10 of two of them.

  • 7th in the “Interview” chart
  • 8th in the “College Radio” chart
  • 34th in “Underground Hip Hop” chart
  • 39th in “Old School Hip Hop” chart
  • 84th in “Hip-Hop/Rap” chart

I have good company in 3 of the charts as well.

DJ Hullewud’s show Break North Radio came in just ahead of me.

And his show put up great numbers as well.

Eclipsing All Other Mixshows (WIB Rap Radio)

The moon tried to black out the sun and everyone looked towards the sky to witness the total solar eclipse this week.

That same night on Word is Bond Rap Radio I did my best to eclipse all other playlists and podcasts with two hours of underground hip-hop mixed live on the radio.

Records passed in front of each other, like the moon and the sun. They played together to create transitions and blends. It might not have been as visually stunning as the celestial event but it wass audibly pleasing and it’s just as worthy of your time.

Press play and enjoy the show!

Paying Tribute to Muhammad Ali on Word is Bond Rap Radio

I had to pay tribute to Muhammad Ali on the radio program last week. Without him, I don’t think we would have hip-hop music and culture. He was a forefather of the art-form. He rapped before anyone knew what rapping was. He had a braggadocio flow that emcees still try to emulate. He is mentioned in countless songs as well. I start off the show with a few of them.

Rest in Peace, Muhammad Ali! You will never be forgotten!

Press play and enjoy the show!

Scott Pilgrim’s London, ON. Connection

Scott Pilgrim Vol 1

Scott Pilgrim Vol 1: Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life by Bryan Lee O’Malley

I saw the film, Scott Pilgrim vs The World a few years back and I was impressed with the quirky writing, hilarious scenes, and original story. I knew that it was based on a book but I knew nothing about the print version of it whatsoever.

I saw this book in the library last week and decided to pick it up. After reading it, I must say that the movie stays true to the source material. I haven’t read the entire story though, it continues on in a few separate graphic novels, but so far everything that has happened on the page, pretty much happened in the film too.

Reading the afterward was especially enlightening. I knew the story was uniquely Canadian but I didn’t know of the London, Ontario connection.

Scott Pilgrim Afterward

My radio show, Word is Bond, is on the very same station the author mentions in the afterward. I’ve been to concerts at Call the Office, a local venue. And I have shopped at Sunrise Records in Westmount Mall.

It was cool to see that Bryan Lee O’Malley was inspired to write this story from his time spent in London, Ontario.

This story was told so well on the screen that I can honestly say that the film version is better than the book. It’s hard to say that about any movie. In fact, I have only had one other film, in my opinion, that surpasses the book. Ironically, it was a comic as well. I am talking about V for Vendetta.

The afterward is fairly long. It includes character sketches and information about how each character came to be. It shows how the author used real locations and photos to draw the scenes. It even includes the original pitch he made to get the series green lit. It is a nice window into the entire creative process.

I think you should check out both the film and print versions and get to know Scott Pilgrim. You won’t be disappointed.

Celebrating 4 Years of Word is Bond Rap Radio

WIB 4th Banner

Tonight, we celebrate the 4th Anniversary of Word is Bond Rap Radio.

It’s hard to believe that I started this show four years ago. I have had some great times on the airwaves, produced dozen of documentaries about hip-hop, interviewed close to 100 musicians, had live performances, and spun a lot of great music.

We are having a party at the radio station to celebrate this milestone. If you live anywhere near London, Ontario, Canada, please come by CHRW at Western University to kick it with me live on the air. You are invited to perform a song, jump in on a cypher, and spin a few tracks.

BRING – your beats or tunes on a USB

TUNE IN LIVE – if you can’t make it out, listen to the radio  or stream it worldwide.

PHONE IN – (519) 661-3600 I will put you on the air to give your shout-outs and well-wishes.

Campus Radio is a Jewel for the Community

CHRW is a JewelAs you know, I have a radio show on 94.9 CHRW. I just celebrated the 200th episode of the show and I couldn’t have done it with the support of Western University and the airwaves on which to broadcast.

My show has given me access to all sorts of musicians and celebrities. I have interviewed some of my favourite artists and even talked to Olympic Champions on the air.

The station gives back to the diverse community by offering programming in a variety of different languages.

There are close to 170 students who freely give their time to host programs, do the news, cover the university sporting events,  and work behind the scenes in the technical realm. There are nearly as many community volunteers or alumni still donating their time and expertise to the station as well.

Some of our volunteers have moved on to prominent positions in the media as well. Kevin Newman now works for CTV. Daniel Shulman moved on to TSN and ESPN directly from CHRW. Stephen Brunt writes for the Globe and Mail. Adrienne Arsenault is a familiar face on CBC. And that it just the tip of the iceberg.

Our hosts regularly give their time to fundraising efforts in the community. We champion for the students of Western University and deliver relevant and timely content to everyone within listening range, and the entire world through online streaming and archived shows.

We play a lot of local artists and support Canadian talent every single week. The music landscape in London, Ontario is rich and diverse, and we celebrate that wholeheartedly.

The radio station relies on donations during its annual pledge week to maintain its costs of operation. However, the main source of funds comes from a student levy that sees every student contributing $13 to CHRW. 94% of our funding comes from this fee.

In my humble opinion, this is a very small price to pay for such a jewel. We need local programming on the radio and on television. Local TV is facing a crisis right now when it comes to original and news programming. We don’t want to see our voice on the radio dial shrink or, even worse, be silenced.

What you can do!

    • Take to Social Media like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and any other sites you use to tell people how important CHRW is to you.
    • Go to the Budget Presentation and USC Motion on Wednesday February 24th at 6:00 p.m. (Room 269C, UCC, Western University Campus)
    • Contact the Student Council and let them know how you feel.
    • Listen to the station and share online that you do!

Thank you for being on this musical journey with me for the past four years. Let’s fight to keep our station viable and broadcasting for the good of the students, the community, and the university at large.

Much appreciated!
