The Come Up Show – Record Store Day Edition (with DJ Chase March)

Record Store Day was this past Saturday and it celebrated its tenth year, encouraging consumers to visit their local record shops for all sorts of exclusive releases and material.

Cheeky Monkey (Sarnia)

I stood in line before the store opened to make sure I could get a few items that I had my eye on,

Brother Ali RSD

including this triple LP re-issue from Brother Ali on clear vinyl.

Soul Assasins - Picture Disc

I also picked up a double LP compilation from Profile Records and a cool picture disc  from the Soul Assassins.

Vinyl DJ mix

I was fortunate enough to be asked to guest-host The Come Up Show that day as well, and I got to spin these records for the very first time on the air. The red one is from the Profile Records release and the black one is one of my older records.

Mission 5 on vinyl

Since I was celebrating record store day and spinning vinyl on the radio, I had to take out the record I made back in 2000. I am very proud to have released my own music on vinyl. This one is a triple single with three songs on Side A and their accompanying instrumentals on Side B. My group was called Mission 5 and the song I played was “Close the Curtain.”

Here are the other songs that I played on the show.

O.C. – Ma Dukes
Ruff Ryders – Ride or Die
3 Fresh MCs – Fresh
Beatnuts – No Escapin’ This
Nine – Whutcha Want
Run-DMC – Ooh What’cha Gonna Do
Kool Moe Dee – Knowledge is King
Peanuts and Corn – Savings Account
Sir Menelik ft Grand Puba and Sadat X – 7XL

My Radio Show is 5 Now!

My radio show, Word is Bond celebrated its 5th Anniversary with special in-studio guests, live performances, a freestyle cypher, hip-hop trivia, and prizes last week.

I had a lot of fun spinning songs that featured 5 emcees on the tracks. I tested my listener’s knowledge of hip-hop by asking trivia questions about the fifth album releases from artists. And I gave away packs of 5 gum as prizes.

Paying Tribute to Muhammad Ali on Word is Bond Rap Radio

I had to pay tribute to Muhammad Ali on the radio program last week. Without him, I don’t think we would have hip-hop music and culture. He was a forefather of the art-form. He rapped before anyone knew what rapping was. He had a braggadocio flow that emcees still try to emulate. He is mentioned in countless songs as well. I start off the show with a few of them.

Rest in Peace, Muhammad Ali! You will never be forgotten!

Press play and enjoy the show!

Campus Radio is a Jewel for the Community

CHRW is a JewelAs you know, I have a radio show on 94.9 CHRW. I just celebrated the 200th episode of the show and I couldn’t have done it with the support of Western University and the airwaves on which to broadcast.

My show has given me access to all sorts of musicians and celebrities. I have interviewed some of my favourite artists and even talked to Olympic Champions on the air.

The station gives back to the diverse community by offering programming in a variety of different languages.

There are close to 170 students who freely give their time to host programs, do the news, cover the university sporting events,  and work behind the scenes in the technical realm. There are nearly as many community volunteers or alumni still donating their time and expertise to the station as well.

Some of our volunteers have moved on to prominent positions in the media as well. Kevin Newman now works for CTV. Daniel Shulman moved on to TSN and ESPN directly from CHRW. Stephen Brunt writes for the Globe and Mail. Adrienne Arsenault is a familiar face on CBC. And that it just the tip of the iceberg.

Our hosts regularly give their time to fundraising efforts in the community. We champion for the students of Western University and deliver relevant and timely content to everyone within listening range, and the entire world through online streaming and archived shows.

We play a lot of local artists and support Canadian talent every single week. The music landscape in London, Ontario is rich and diverse, and we celebrate that wholeheartedly.

The radio station relies on donations during its annual pledge week to maintain its costs of operation. However, the main source of funds comes from a student levy that sees every student contributing $13 to CHRW. 94% of our funding comes from this fee.

In my humble opinion, this is a very small price to pay for such a jewel. We need local programming on the radio and on television. Local TV is facing a crisis right now when it comes to original and news programming. We don’t want to see our voice on the radio dial shrink or, even worse, be silenced.

What you can do!

    • Take to Social Media like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and any other sites you use to tell people how important CHRW is to you.
    • Go to the Budget Presentation and USC Motion on Wednesday February 24th at 6:00 p.m. (Room 269C, UCC, Western University Campus)
    • Contact the Student Council and let them know how you feel.
    • Listen to the station and share online that you do!

Thank you for being on this musical journey with me for the past four years. Let’s fight to keep our station viable and broadcasting for the good of the students, the community, and the university at large.

Much appreciated!

WIB Rap Radio – Sankdafied and Speak EZ

I love getting local acts on my radio show. I have an open-door policy about it. Basically, all you need to do is to ask me and you can come by the station one night. We can do an interview, play some of your music, and kick a freestyle live on the air.

I am regularly out and about at local shows and am active on social media, so I am easy to find and connect with. So there really is no excuse, If you are an artist, you need to reach out to your community radio station.

On today’s edition of the show, Speak EZ comes by to talk about the new EP his group, Typewriters, is about to drop. He is also starting to work on some solo materiel. I can’t wait to hear both projects. These guys have a stage presence that absolutely blew me away the first time I saw them. They won me over right away with a brilliant 15 minute set at a Dirty Thursday last year.

Sankdafied is also on the program today and hearing his recorded music for the first time blew me away as well. I recognized the tunes from all the times I’ve seen him live and wsa really vibing to how great they sound on the radio. I can’t wait for his project to drop. It’s going to be really dope.

Press play and enjoy the podcast and remember to tune in live tonight at 12:00 midnight to hear the show on the radio.

The Rap Guide to Evolution (Know Your History: Episode 52)

Baba BrinkmanWelcome to Know Your History, your monthly dose of hip-hop knowledge. I’m your host Chase March and we have a great show for you today.

Normally, what I do on this program is build the show around a specific theme that is important to hip-hop culture. I do a lot of research, find songs that fit the topic, and combine all of that into a thirty minute documentary.

Today’s show is going to be a little different. We are going to combine science and hip-hop. Now, I know that doesn’t sound novel. Rappers often claim to drop science on their records, which of course is just slang meaning that they are going to try to educate you with their rhyme. When rappers drop science, they aren’t always discussing scientific principles.

Today, I am going to hand the reigns over to Baba Brinkman and he is going to be dropping actual science for the rest of the program. I will be airing his TED talk entitled, The Rap Guide to Evolution.

If you are not familiar with TED talks, you are in for a treat. TED started out as a conference back in 1984 where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, hence the name TED. Since then, it has grown to become a global phenomenon.

Basically the idea is that speakers are given less than 20 minutes to deliver a presentation on a topic. The goal is simply to educate and entertain.

On their website, they say, “We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world. On, we’re building a clearinghouse of free knowledge from the world’s most inspired thinkers — and a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other.”

That’s very similar to my goal for this monthly documentary series.

Creative Commons licensing allows us to air this talk on the program today as long as it isn’t edited or altered. So, without further ado, here is The Rap Guide to Evolution by Baba Brinkman from TEDxSMU.
